£1.5m Awarded to Offshore Wind in Scotland
The Scottish Government has awarded companies in the offshore wind sector £1.5 million of funding to increase innovation, reduce costs and encourage further investment.
The funding has been awarded to the Carbon Trust to support its Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) research and design programme.
OWA was set up in 2008 to drive forward new technologies in the offshore wind sector.
Previous funding rounds have supported research into the floating wind technology market and into the use of concrete foundations for offshore wind farms in deeper waters.
With the money, the Carbon Trust will, says the Scottish Government, fund projects that:
• Continue to explore the opportunity that floating wind offers to Scotland;
• Encourage international collaboration on offshore wind developers’ more pressing problems, such as addressing how developers working in Scottish waters can make offshore wind more efficient; and
• Sharing knowledge on innovation and cost reduction between partners.
Energy minister Paul Wheelhouse said: “Previous Scottish Government support for the OWA has helped develop new ideas in key areas of importance to companies operating in Scottish waters and I have no doubt this new funding will help firms to continue this important work.
“Innovation in renewables also continues to contribute to the excellent progress we are making on reducing greenhouse gas emissions after the recent announcement that Scotland has exceeded its 2020 target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 42 per cent six years early.”
