New Waverley has announced that The Arches has been awarded the coveted Commercial Project of the Year title in the Herald Property Awards for Scotland, which was held in Glasgow on Thursday, September 22.
The prestigious award recognises the significant progress made by The Arches this year, transforming a previously neglected part of Edinburgh into a vibrant leisure and commercial quarter in the centre of the Old Town.
The judges said that they were “incredibly impressed” with The Arches and described it as “a stand out entry in a hugely competitive category.”
New Waverley’s Project Director, Clive Wilding, said upon accepting the award: “The Arches has been an amazing success for New Waverley this year, both in the quality of its design and in the quality of its tenants. We have seen the area transformed from a quiet back street into a buzzing, exciting place to visit, offering something completely different to other city centre locations.
“It’s great news that The Arches is now recognised by our industry peers as Scotland’s top commercial project, providing a high profile gateway for the rest of the New Waverley development which is now progressing on all fronts.”
The Arches are a row of 19 newly renovated Victorian arches on East Market Street, Edinburgh, as part of the £150 million New Waverley development which is currently transforming the centre of the Old Town.
The scheme was delivered in partnership with Edinburgh based firm Staran Architects, Horizon M&E Services Design Ltd and Union Projects.
The spectacular C-listed brickwork arches were originally constructed in 1875 to create double-height openings beneath the city’s Jeffrey Street. Now Artisan Real Estate Investors, the developer behind New Waverley, has brought the historic arches back to life, bringing together an eclectic community of independent retailers, cafes and restaurants to provide a refreshing contrast to typical high street environments.
