The new Mayor of Greater Manchester attended the launch of a new flagship scheme that that offers affordable housing for the young people of Salford. The Hive has been launched in Kersal and is a new state of the art facility that is owned by the housing provider Salix Homes. The facility will deliver much needed accommodation for young people in the area aged between 18 and 25.
The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham attended the launch of the Hive, and while there he announced that the Mayor of Salford, Paul Dennett, will be his new portfolio lead for housing; including regeneration and homelessness.
Andy Burnham supports the new development in Salford as he has the same beliefs that drove the facility to be created. Andy has also pledged as the new mayor to help young people as well as create more affordable housing that could help young people to start their careers and make their way in to the adult world of work. The Hive works to help young people who live independently while in entry level jobs or finishing off training. A great number of young people who live independently struggle, with the majority of their low starting wage, or apprenticeship wage going straight on to rented accommodation. The Hive will provide accommodation for 14 young people to live while they work, or complete their education or training.
Andy Burnham has expressed hopes that more projects like The Hive will be developed across Greater Manchester. The Hive will provide a safe and secure place that will offer their inhabitants a good start to their adult life, meaning that they can prosper and become successful in the future. Salix have also said that they hope that The Hive is the first of many more opportunities to help out the younger generation in Greater Manchester.
The Hive will prioritize those whose ability to find work or to study is being hampered because of unsuitable living arrangements. The people that are good candidates for these scheme may be sofa surfing or without a permanent address. The Hive will provide its inhabitants with more training opportunities, as Salix is working alongside local skills and education providers in order to offer on-site training programmes for the residents of the project. These courses range from cooking courses to IT classes.
