When Harry was a child, he spent many holidays with his aunt in Hunstanton, unaware that more than 30 years later, he would settle in the area and launch his own business.
Cheshire and Oldfield, now establishing itself as Norfolk’s newest premium bed specialist, opened its first store in St Nicholas’ Court, Dersingham, in October. The business is a tribute to Harry’s great aunt, Sylvia Cheshire, and his great-grandmother, Ivy May, from whom it takes its name.
Cheshire and Oldfield places an emphasis on comfort and eco-conscious design, drawing from a rich tradition of British bed-making expertise. Founder Harry Oldfield, with over 20 years of family history in the industry as the son of the founders of the Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Co. on the Sandringham Estate, saw an opportunity in the market. He established Cheshire and Oldfield to make high-quality British craftsmanship and natural materials more accessible without compromising on the expectations of his customers.
“With Cheshire and Oldfield, we want to highlight the undeniable quality of British craftsmanship, whether with a wrought iron bed or popular divan base,” says Harry. “It’s important that customers prize longevity and sustainability to choose products that last a lifetime- whilst having a positive effect on our environment.”
Inspired by his great-grandmother, who worked as a fashion buyer, Harry’s business philosophy reflects long-standing values that were established long before the sustainability movement gained momentum.
“I often think back to the fond memories of visiting Sylvia when she lived behind the water tower in Hunstanton after retiring from her and uncle Ken’s coal merchant business in Essex,” Harry recalls. “Both Ivy May and Sylvia instilled a strong work ethic in our family, but it was Ivy May who taught us to look for high-quality, durable products so you only buy once and buy right.” Cheshire and Oldfield continues this tradition with its range of exclusive bed manufacturers.
Their divan styles offer plush padded headboards, under-bed storage, and natural fibre upholstery in shades ranging from classic grey to rich navy and sage green. Ideal for smaller spaces like a cottage or guest room, these storage solutions maximise space without sacrificing elegance. The metal and brass beds collection, crafted by Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Co., reflects Harry’s heritage and the business his mother, Amanda Oldfield, established.
In addition, Cheshire and Oldfield offers deluxe divans from Enchanted House Beds, whose luxurious designs, such as the Sandringham upholstered bedstead, use natural materials like cotton and Dartmoor wool, offering an alternative to high-end brands like Savoir and Vispring at a more affordable price.
When it comes to mattresses, Cheshire and Oldfield provides a wide selection of British-made wool mattresses and bedding, designed for ultimate comfort and support. From the Sandringham Wool Collection to options by Archibold Beckers, London, these brands exemplify Cheshire and Oldfield’s commitment to providing restful, luxurious sleep.
What makes Cheshire and Oldfield unique is their unparalleled expertise, gained through over a decade of experience in bed and mattress design. Harry and his team demonstrate a deep understanding of customer needs, offering reliable, personalised service. Whether you need bespoke bed designs, practical under-bed storage, or something that fits your interior décor, Cheshire and Oldfield offer sleep solutions that combine functionality with comfort.
