As UK travellers plan their summer getaways, new research shows that home improvements remain a key spending priority alongside travel.
According to the latest data from Statista, while holidays top the list of discretionary spending in 2025 across countries including the UK, US, Germany, China, and India, home upgrades aren’t far behind. In fact, the category ranked fourth overall, placing above fashion, beauty, and wellness in the global breakdown.
The infographic, titled “Miles Before Meals”, reflects a growing trend: many people want their homes in good shape before they head off to enjoy some sun.
That could mean repairing rattling doors, replacing ageing windows, or simply making a home feel more comfortable and energy-efficient before the suitcase is even packed.
Colin Greenslade, who owns the UK-wide business Colin’s Sash Windows, says it’s a pattern he sees time and again. “People want to enjoy their time away, sure — but they also want to come home to somewhere that’s warm and not costing a fortune to heat,” he shared.
“We’ve had customers telling us they’re upgrading before their holidays, just so they’re not dreading the energy bills when they get back.”
With energy prices still a hot topic, and homes responsible for a big chunk of heat loss through old windows and doors, homeowners are still thinking about ways to cut down on waste and make their spaces more efficient.
Colin added: “While the beach might be calling, many are making sure their own front doors are in good shape before they go because no one wants to come back from a relaxing break only to be hit with a cold house and a warm gas bill.”
