Brits are being offered cheap hacks to keep warm in bed on the chilly nights to keep energy costs down.
Sleep experts at Online-Bedrooms.co.uk have revealed their seven tips for staying warm when getting to sleep during the colder months.
Cold weather will negatively impact our sleep patterns over wintertime, with many waking up throughout the night to try and keep warm.
Rather than turning on the expensive heating overnight, Britons should wear lots of silk or cotton layers to bed and use a heated blanket or hot water bottle.
Another tip to keep warm in bed is to have a warm milky drink and move beds away from the window.
Nic Shacklock, from Online-Bedrooms.co.uk, said: “Many of us really struggle when getting to bed at night during the winter. It’s a horrible feeling when you wake up in the middle of the night because of the cold.
“But there are several things you can do to keep your bed warm during the night rather than switching on the heating, which can get extremely expensive.
“Use a hot water bottle or heated blanket, and wear several layers rather than one thick jumper.
“Move your bed away from the window to stay away from the cold seeping through and drink a warm milky drink before going to sleep.”
Here are seven tips on stay warm in bed this winter:
- Layers
Rather than wearing one layer of thick clothing to bed, having several items of thinner fabrics will trap the heat in between each layer and to keep the body warm overnight.
- Choose right materials
Some of the best materials for keeping warm are silk, cotton and wool, rather than synthetic fabrics. Wear layers of lightweight pyjamas and jumpers to bed, with woollen blankets and cotton sheets.
- Warm milk drink
To keep warm before going to sleep, have a warm milky drink in the evening. The drink will warm the body from the inside, and milk contains tryptophan which helps the body prepare for sleeping.
- Hot water bottle
Rather than sleeping with the heating on, warm your bed before getting in with a hot water bottle. The heat will keep the blood flowing around the body and help you get a relaxing night sleep.
- Heated blanket
Heated electric blankets are cheap to run and are a really effective way at keeping yourself and your bed warm throughout the night. Many blankets allow you to set a timer to automatically turn off after a few hours.
- Fluffy socks
Our feet can become much colder more quickly than other parts of the body due to less circulation. Thermal, knitted or fluffy socks are great for keeping the warmth in.
- Move your bed
If your bed is near a window the cold from the outside can seep through and affect your sleep, even if it is double-glazed. Consider moving your bed away from the window for a warmer night’s sleep.
