Brits are being offered top cleaning hacks on how to remove hard water stains and achieve a streak-free finish.

The experts at MeandMyGlass.co.uk have revealed eight clever ways to get rid of stubborn water marks off items around the home such as taps and shower screens.

Hard watermarks can be difficult to clean if they’re left to accumulate on surfaces over time.

The experts recommend using products such as washing up liquid, baking soda and white vinegar to get rid of the pesky stains.

They also advise using microfibre cloths after cleaning to remove any streak marks to achieve a spotless, sparkly finish.

John Cutts, expert at MeandMyGlass.co.uk, said: “Hard water marks can be a pain to clean as they can appear after one run of the tap or five-minute shower.

“It’s important to keep on top of cleaning the water stains as they can become challenging to remove if you don’t get rid of them quickly enough.

“We advise using products such as white vinegar, lemons and even toothpaste to get rid of the stains from items like shower taps and shower heads.

“It’s also best to keep a microfibre cloth in hand to get rid of any streak marks left from cleaning.”

Here are eight ways to remove stubborn hard water stains:

    1. Toothpaste

The abrasive elements in toothpaste can help remove water stains on bathroom and kitchen taps without causing scratches. Apply a small amount on a non-abrasive sponge and clean off with piping hot water.

    1. White vinegar

White vinegar has been praised as a super cleaner in removing stains around the house and the same applies to removing hard water marks. Mix it in a bottle with distilled water and spray it on the stains.

    1. Lemons

The citric acid in lemons can help to dissolve the water marks. As a double-solvent, it’s worth dousing the fruit in white vinegar to scrub them off effectively.

    1. Baking soda

It’s worth sprinkling baking soda on items where hard water stains have built up. Scrub it gently in a circular motion and wipe it down with a microfibre cloth to remove streak marks.

    1. Isopropyl alcohol

Pour isopropyl alcohol onto a polyester cloth to get rid of the toughest of water stains. It works best on window glass and shower screens.

    1. Pumice stone

A pumice stone can be a great way to get rid of hard water build-up on the toilet. Make sure to scrub the stains off gently to avoid scratches and excess damage.

    1. Steel wool

Steel wool is the best option to use on limescale and hard water stains on shower heads as it can help break down the tough residue. Avoid using the wool on glass as it can cause scratches.

    1. Nail polish remover

Nail polish remover can surprisingly be an effective cleaning solvent in getting rid of hard water marks off glassware. It can also be used to clean the tough stains on taps by placing the substance on a cotton pad.
