Barratt Developments, one of the largest residential property development companies in the UK, has started a collaboration with Swindon Borough Council for the construction of 2,750 houses in Swindon, England. The agreement between the two will see the expansion of the 250 ha Wichelstowe development in the southern edge of the town.
“This is a significant deal for the Council and for Swindon. The joint venture partnership will see us working closely over the long term with the UK’s biggest and most successful housebuilder, said Toby Elliott, Swindon Borough Council Strategic Planning and Sustainability Cabinet Member Councillor. “Our aim with Wichelstowe is to build a community that will be very attractive to live in, and with all the facilities nearby that people need and value,” added him.
The new project will create over 1,000 jobs in the initial stages and the homes will be ready to be welcomed by residents in 2019.
The development’s outline plan was approved in 2005 and since then nearly 800 houses have been built in the east Wichel area. The Wichelstowe area will now see the restoration of the Wilts and Berks canal.
“We are extremely pleased to be moving the Wichelstowe development forward,” said Barratt Developments West Region Regional Managing Director Chris Burton. “This is a very important scheme and I’m delighted to report that we share Swindon Borough Council’s vision in creating an outstanding place to live for the people of Swindon and further afield,” added him.
Founded nearly 60 years ago, Barratt Developments has built more than 450,000 homes since. It acquires land, obtains planning consents and then builds the highest quality homes in places people aspire to live. Its vision is to lead the future of housebuilding by putting customers at the heart of everything they do. The business makes a significant contribution to the UK’s economy and to the communities in which it operates.
