Plans have been revealed for a new ‘next generation’ £350 million regional shopping centre in the heart of Yorkshire. Axiom is the biggest out of town shopping centre to be granted planning consent in the UK in 20 years and it will become the largest out of town retail development in England since 1999.
Axiom promises to meet customers’ demands and will combine shopping, showrooming, leisure, sports, culture, events, and outdoor pursuits in one place. It will be located next to one of only six snow domes in the UK and will contain a stadium for concerts and sport and a country park that will deliver a programme of outdoor events and experiences.
Designed by the global architect and masterplanner Chapman Taylor, Axiom will be situated directly off junction 32 of the M62, an area capable of supporting regional access to more than five million within a 50 minute drive time.
“I never thought we would have the opportunity to deliver another out of town project on this scale in the UK. To have a 100+ acre site with planning permission in such as accessible location gives fantastic opportunity to draw on from our retail design experience from around the world,” said Adrian Griffiths, Axiom’s lead architect.
CACI, the retail analytics specialist, predicts that the new shopping centre will become one of UK’s top 40 retail destination. The development has already attracted a number of key retailers such as Marks & Spencer, Primark, Next, and Boots.
“The scale of Axiom means that we have the space and flexibility to draw from the best retail and leisure innovations from around the world and curate them in one place. Working with Chapman Taylor, our aim has always been to incorporate the latest digital technologies, catering offers, and leisure attractions, so that the shopping is enhanced by an enjoyable leisure experience,” concluded Philip Lunn, the co-founder.
