Ashberry Homes welcomed construction students from Harlow College to view its innovative House to Home property in Bishop’s Stortford and find out more about what is involved in building a new home.
The group of 18 students from the college’s Carpentry department visited Maltings Place at St James’ Park on Wednesday 12 June.
They were given a tour of the House to Home property, an on-site plot which offers visitors a unique behind the-scenes look at exactly how a new property is built by showcasing various stages of construction.
The students could see examples of the first-fix stage, also known as the pre-plaster stage, when blockwork, plumbing and wiring are visible, the second-fix stage, when sinks and baths, floors, internal doors, sockets and switches are installed, and the third and final stage, which comprises wall and floor tiling, carpeting and decorating.
Mark Strange, Head of Automotive, Building Services and Construction at Harlow College, said: “The House to Home project is an excellent teaching resource that supports our students and enriches our curriculum.
“This initiative helps bridge the gap between education and the construction industry. We are looking forward to developing our working relationship with Ashberry Homes/Bellway Group, benefiting our students who are training to gain sustainable employment within the construction industry.
Ashberry Homes is part of the Bellway Group, and Bellway has already built 77 House to Home plots across the company’s divisions and plans to deliver one such building at every new site.
As well as educating customers about the processes involved in building their home, the House to Home project is also being used to support the learning of employees, subcontractors, colleges and schools and promote careers in construction.
Matthew Saw, Ashberry Homes Sales Manager, said: “The tour of our House to Home plot at Maltings Place at St James’ Park provided a unique, hands-on experience for students from Harlow College which illustrated the various stages involved in building a new home.
“We hope the visit helped support their college-based learning by seeing the processes involved in housebuilding at first hand and will help encourage them to pursue a career in construction when they have completed their course.”
