Fast food restaurants put Altro flooring and wall cladding on the menu
Altro safety flooring and wall cladding products have received the international seal of approval from three world-famous fast food chains. The UK-developed Altro Stronghold 30 safety flooring and Altro Whiterock hygienic wall cladding are installed in fast food outlets in the UK, Europe and beyond.
Installed separately, or in combination as an integrated system, Altro safety flooring and wall cladding products are delivering highly-effective protection in the kitchens of the world’s best known fast food restaurants. Durable and impact-resistant, they are tough products for tough environments.
Hygiene standards and the safety of employees and customers are key priorities for fast food outlets. Kitchens in these highly-pressurised restaurants need to be functional to ensure that food can be prepared quickly and efficiently, however busy the outlet may become. Flooring needs to withstand demanding, wet and greasy conditions where frequent spillage is likely, providing a hard-wearing, slip-resistant surface. Wall cladding needs to be waterproof, easy to clean and impact resistant to enable employees to maintain high standards of hygiene.
Three of the world’s best known fast food chains – Pret a Manger, KFC and McDonalds – have found that Altro products excel when installed in these demanding environments.
Integrated system the answer for Pret a Manger
For Pret a Manger, Altro’s integrated flooring and walling system was the solution for outstanding performance and simplified cleaning.
Pret a Manger – a British-owned company – offers a combination of fresh ingredients and fast food: all the sandwiches and salads are prepared on the day in the restaurant kitchen, with fresh products delivered daily. The company chose Altro Stronghold 30 safety flooring with a coved skirting, to form a continuous, impermeable, surface with Altro Whiterock hygienic wall cladding. This floor-wall solution is easy to clean, resistant to grime and tough enough to tolerate knocks from trolleys and other kitchen equipment.
Altro Stronghold 30 is a 3mm thick safety flooring designed for use in demanding, wet and greasy conditions where frequent spillage is likely, so it is ideal for commercial kitchen use. Boasting Altro’s highest rating for slip resistance, it also offers long-term durability and ease of cleaning as well as added noise reduction, comfort and strength underfoot. Altro Stronghold benefits from a 15 year warranty and offers 20 years’ lifetime sustained slip resistance, keeping risk of a slip to just one in a million over this period of time.
Altro Whiterock is a cost-effective sheet extruded from a high quality, food safe PVCu polymer for operating temperatures up to 60o. It is waterproof, easy to clean, impact resistant and grout-free. It meets current EU Directives on health and hygiene.
Having proved its effectiveness in Pret a Manger’s British restaurants, the management of the French chain decided to specify the Altro solution in its own outlets. Pret a Manger Operations Support Manager, Adrien Garcia, said: “The Altro floors and walls in the kitchen can be cleaned with jet washers, which ensures impeccable hygiene while simultaneously saving time on cleaning.
“Our other priority is safety, and the slip-resistant properties of Altro flooring respond perfectly to our demands. In addition, with a certified installer, the installation is extremely quick: the restaurant kitchen at Issy les Moulineaux, just outside Paris, was completed in one week.”
Safety first for KFC in Spain
When KFC, the world-famous chain of fried chicken restaurants, opened its new branch in Málaga, the slip resistance performance of the flooring was a key priority. The Málaga outlet is open seven days a week, with extended opening hours at the weekend, and also includes a drive-through. This means that foot-traffic across the food preparation area is exceptionally high.
Boasting Altro’s highest rating for slip resistance (PTV≥55, R12), Altro Stronghold 30 safety flooring proved ideal for the tough demands of the kitchen area.
Franco Giuseppe Zirotti, KFC’s external architect consultant, said: “We needed flooring that could be hot-welded to provide an impervious surface. It was also important that it could provide slip resistance, easy maintenance and would be easy to install. Altro Stronghold 30 is beyond comparison; on one hand it offers slip resistance for our workers, helping keep them safe, and on the other, it allows us to clean and maintain the flooring in our installations perfectly. We would recommend it without hesitation.”
Ease of cleaning for McDonald’s
The superior hygiene performance of Altro Whiterock wall cladding, in comparison to ceramic tiles, was the deciding factor for McDonald’s. Since 1955, quality, service, cleanliness and affordability have helped McDonald’s become one of the world’s most famous brands. Already in 119 countries around the world, McDonald’s serves 64 million customers every day.
When specifying wall cladding for the Forum and the Itis McDonald’s restaurants in Helsinki, Altro Whiterock was identified as the optimum solution for food preparation areas, due to its ease of cleaning and maintenance. Having proved its effectiveness in this demanding environment, Altro Whiterock has now been specified for all future McDonalds in Finland.
“The restaurant staff have been very pleased with the new the wall cladding, finding it easier to keep clean than the old tiled walls,” explains Teemu Ruokokoski, McDonald’s facilities consultant in Finland. “Altro Whiterock provides a smooth, seamless surface that creates a good look and feel for the kitchens.”
