Lift displays from Avire connect with Wellcome Collection visitors : E-Motive’s LCD Panorama encourages public to explore venue
The Wellcome Trust has chosen LCD displays from Avire for the refurbished public lifts in Wellcome Collection in Euston, London. The lifts were upgraded as part of a major development of Wellcome Collection, a free exhibition and public events venue exploring the connections between medicine, life and art.
“One of the main objectives of the development project was to improve vertical circulation,” explained Chris Bunker, Construction Director at the Wellcome Trust. “We were getting a lot of people visiting the venue, exploring the ground floor but being reluctant to explore further, particularly the upper floors where there are more galleries and exhibition spaces.”
Avire’s distributor Dewhurst UK supplied four 19-inch Panorama media displays from E-Motive for the car operating panels in the lifts in Wellcome Collection, plus 36 R1-043 screens for the landing indicator panels. The lifts previously featured basic displays and static signage.
Dewhurst UK played a prominent role in the project. In addition to specifying the Panorama, Dewhurst worked with the client to develop both the layout and content of the display, while full network commissioning was assisted by the company’s technical team.
The Wellcome Trust was keen to ensure that the 20-year-old lifts would not compare unfavourably with a new staircase which had been specifically designed to draw visitors to the upper levels. The lifts needed to be as engaging as possible to encourage the public to explore the venue, and it was this consideration that led to the Trust opting for the Panorama displays.
“The graphics that we have been able to display on the screens within the lifts have been great in allowing us to promote the exhibitions within Wellcome Collection.” added Chris, “The displays are certainly doing what we intended them to do, encouraging people to explore Wellcome Collection further.”
The Panorama uses LED-backlit LCD technology to provide vivid coloured images. The display has flexible and configurable software allowing rich media broadcasting in a third of the size of a typical 16:9-screen. Flexible custom screen layouts are programmed by building management to display any desired combination of information including floor number, lift direction, static or scrolling messages, synchronised floor directories, advertisements, live feeds and video clips.
