CIH Responds To Government Plan To Directly Commission New Homes
Responding to Prime Minister David Cameron’s announcement that the government is to directly commission new homes and set up a £1.2bn starter home fund, Chartered Institute of Housing chief executive Terrie Alafat said: “We need a swift and significant increase in the number of new homes being built to solve our national housing crisis, so the investment in direct commissioning is a welcome development – the government has clearly recognised that building is not happening as fast as it would like, or on the scale that’s required.
“Today’s announcement should also help to support small to medium-sized builders and make better use of public land.”
She added: “However, all of the focus appears to be on starter homes, which won’t provide for everyone’s needs. We need to make sure we are building a range of new homes for people on all incomes – that means homes for rents that are truly affordable, for shared ownership and for private rent too. What about people on lower incomes who can’t afford to buy, even with a 20 per cent discount?”
