In fact, Acorn Stairlifts are designed to take up the minimum of space. The single rail fixes securely and neatly to the stairs close to the wall or banister, whichever works best. The stairlift carriage – the part you ride on – has a seat, arms and footrest which all fold up out of the way when not in use, making it easy for others to use the stairs normally.
Another option on Acorn Stairlifts is a hinged section at the foot of the rail, so it can be folded up out of the way if it might otherwise cause an obstruction. This can be done manually or electrically.
